Chapter Sixteen

Kaitlyn was in the kitchen feeding Hope when she heard the chime of the doorbell. Maggie asked her to see who was at the door since she was busy. Kaitlyn put the jar of baby food on the table and made sure Hope was secured in her highchair before walking to the front door. When she opened it, she saw Blake. She was startled. She hadn’t expected to see him. For a moment, she was at a loss for words. Finally, she regained her composure.

“Good morning. Won’t you come in?” she asked as she opened the screen door. She noticed he was wearing jeans, a plaid shirt, and a light coat to ward off the chilly weather. She told him to hang his coat on the rack by the door.

He smiled as he looked at her. He thought she looked great, even in her house coat and fuzzy slippers. It was obvious, as always, that she was comfortable with how she looked. He took his hat and coat off and glanced again at her before hanging them on the rack.

“I want to apologize for last night. I had no right to say what I did. I don’t know how long it takes a person to get over their grief, especially when they lose a spouse. I know losing my brother and sister-in-law hit me hard, but I don’t think it’s the same as losing a spouse. So, I apologize.” Then, he paused a moment before saying, “However, having said that, I want you to know that I meant it when I said I’m interested in you! I care about you!” He hesitated before continuing. “But I guess I’ll have to wait patiently for you to decide how you feel.” Then, he smiled again. “Now that I got that out of the way, where’s Hope? I want to see her.”

Kaitlyn was thinking about his apology, so it took a moment for his question to resonate with her. She was slow to answer.

“She’s in the kitchen. I was in the process of feeding her when you rang the doorbell.” She closed the front door and headed for the kitchen. He quickly followed. Then, she sat down at the table and resumed feeding Hope.

When he entered the kitchen, Blake saw Maggie at the stove and greeted her. Upon seeing him, Maggie asked, “How is your mother doing?”

“I just came from the hospital. If she continues to do well, she will come home tomorrow or the next day.”

“That’s good to hear. I know she’ll be glad.”

He grinned. “She will be. She’s ready to leave that place. She said hospitals will kill you.”

Maggie laughed. “I’ve heard that before.”

Kaitlyn glanced at Blake and asked, “Would you like some coffee? If you do, it’s on the counter, and the cups are next to the pot.”

He poured himself a cup and sat down at the table. He watched Kaitlyn as she fed Hope. As she ate, Hope kept looking at Blake and smiling through the goo on her face.
